A Trailblazer in Renewable Energy

Professor Chem Nayar, the founder of Regen Power, dedicated his life to pioneering advancements in renewable energy. Born and educated in India, he moved to Australia in 1982, where he completed the first-ever Australian PhD on wind power at the University of Western Australia in 1984. His groundbreaking research in solar and wind systems made renewable energy more accessible and sustainable. As a result, Professor Nayar became an instrumental figure in the global transition to renewable energy, establishing Regen Power in 2003, a company that now stands as a leader in the solar energy sector in Australia.

Revolutionary Contributions and Innovations

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Nayar authored over 80 refereed journal articles and more than 135 conference papers, sharing his insights and innovations with the world. He was the driving force behind several transformative projects, including the design of Australia’s first hybrid solar systems and numerous solar and wind power installations worldwide. As the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies Australia (CRESTA) founder at Curtin University, he led applied research to solve complex challenges associated with remote power supply systems and weak electricity grids.

Professor Nayar’s pioneering spirit was evident in his creation of innovative renewable energy solutions. His work spanned continents and impacted countries such as Vietnam, India, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. From designing Australia’s first solar farm in Kalbarri to overseeing the 500 kW floating solar power project in India, his expertise helped bring solar energy to even the most remote locations.

Leadership, Teaching, and Mentorship

Beyond his technical achievements, Professor Nayar was a dedicated educator and mentor. He served as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Curtin University, guiding over 40 PhD and master’s students and instilling a passion for practical and sustainable solutions in them. His teaching philosophy emphasized hands-on learning and a deep understanding of real-world applications, shaping the next generation of engineers and researchers.

His involvement extended beyond academia to influential roles in advisory boards, such as his work with the United Nations, where he contributed his expertise on renewable energy and sustainable development. He founded several successful renewable energy companies, including Radiant Solar Pvt Ltd. in India, furthering his mission to spread clean energy solutions globally.

Recognition and Awards

Professor Nayar’s dedication to renewable energy has been recognized with numerous accolades. He received the Ambassador Award at the 2011 Sustainable Energy Association Awards, became the first Fellow of the Australian Solar Academy, and was honoured with the Australian Power Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2021, he was named a finalist for West Australian of the Year and Australian of the Year, acknowledging his immense contributions to sustainability and renewable energy.

Even in his later years, Professor Nayar remained active, offering his knowledge to international bodies and advising on policy development to promote sustainable practices. Today, on the third anniversary of his passing, we remember Professor Chem Nayar for his groundbreaking contributions to renewable energy and his unwavering dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable future for all.
