The GSM Association representing the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry estimates that “nearly 639,000 off-grid base stations – the pieces of equipment which provide cellular network coverage – will be rolled out by 2012 across South and South East Asia, Middle East and Africa where grid availability is among the lowest in the world”.
