Where You Can – and Cannot – Install a Home Battery in Western Australia

The rebate decides whether a Western Australian household buys a battery. The standard decides where that battery is allowed to go. Most buyers spend weeks on the first question and about four minutes on the second, and then discover – usually on installation day – that the wall they had in mind was never an option. 

Since 19 June 2026, WA installers have had no discretion on the matter. On that date, compliance with the amended battery installation standard became mandatory for every electrical licence holder in the state. If you are comparing quotes in Perth right now, the placement conversation is no longer a preference. It is a compliance test, and it is worth understanding before you sign. 


What changed on 19 June 2026

Standards Australia published AS/NZS 5139:2019 Amendment 1:2025 on 19 December 2025, alongside a new edition of AS/NZS 3008.1.1:2025 covering cable selection. WA’s Building and Energy division allowed a six-month transition during which installers could work to either edition. That window closed on 19 June 2026. Full compliance with the amended standard is now required. 

The amendment is not a rewrite. It updates 18 clauses, adds five new clearance figures and introduces an appendix on short-circuit current calculation. But the clauses it touches are precisely the ones that govern where a battery can be mounted in a suburban home – which makes it the most consequential change to residential battery work in WA since the rebate arrived. 

The standard did not make batteries harder to install. It made the location decision explicit – and therefore auditable. 


The four rules that decide where your battery goes

1. Distance from openings and exit paths 

The long-standing principle is that a battery should not sit immediately beside an opening a person needs to escape through, or a window that would carry heat and gas into a habitable room. The working figure is 600 mm. 

The amendment adds a practical exception that matters enormously in Perth. A battery may now sit within 600 mm of an opening wider than 900 mm – the description of almost every roller door in the state – provided safe egress is maintained, with a minimum one-metre walk-through clearance. 

Both conditions must hold. A garage wall that satisfies the 600 mm measurement but leaves only 800 mm of clear passage because of a support post, a chest freezer or a bin store still fails. This is where a paper design and a real garage diverge, and it is why the assessment has to happen on site.

2. Fire separation 

Where a barrier is required between the battery and what sits behind or beside it, the amendment tightens the specification: exempt materials now require a minimum 6 mm thickness. Thin sheeting that previously passed by convention no longer does. On a double-brick Perth home this is rarely an issue. On a stud-framed wall backing onto a bedroom, it changes the build. 

3. Habitable rooms and access ways

Batteries do not belong in bedrooms, in rooms opening directly onto a bedroom, or in a hallway or stairwell that forms the escape route from one. Ceiling spaces and under-floor cavities remain unsuitable. In a typical Perth four-by-two, this eliminates most of the internal envelope and leaves the garage, the utility wall and the external side or rear elevation. 

4. Power conversion equipment reclassified

The amendment reclassifies power conversion equipment as an associated appliance rather than part of the battery system proper. In practice this gives designers more freedom to place the inverter where it makes electrical sense – closer to the switchboard, out of afternoon sun – instead of tethering it to the battery’s clearance envelope. Combined with the new cable selection tables in AS/NZS 3008.1.1:2025, it can materially change a system layout.

The thermal point deserves emphasis because it is the one no standard will decide for you. WA installers have spent two summers learning what sustained forty-degree afternoons do to equipment mounted on the wrong elevation. A battery on a west-facing wall in Wanneroo will meet the standard and still underperform the same battery on the south wall of the same house. Why the placement decision usually arrives too late

The common failure is procedural rather than technical. A system gets sized against a bill, priced, and signed. Someone visits the property for the first time on installation morning. The intended wall does not work. At that point the household has three unattractive options: accept a location nobody would have chosen, pay a variation for the cabling required to reach a compliant wall, or delay. 

None of that is a standards problem. It is a sequencing problem. The placement assessment costs almost nothing when it happens before the design is fixed, and costs real money when it happens after.


Six questions worth asking before you sign

  1. Which specific wall is this battery going on, and has someone stood in front of it?
  2. What is the measured clearance to the nearest opening, and the clear walk-through path with the garage in its normal state?
  3. Does the proposed location require a fire barrier, and if so, what material and thickness?
  4. What is the afternoon sun exposure on that wall between December and February?
  5. Where is the inverter going, and how far is the cable run to the switchboard?
  6. Is the quoted design compliant with AS/NZS 5139:2019 Amendment 1, in writing?

An installer who can answer all six without a site visit is guessing. An installer who declines to put the sixth in writing is telling you something.


The standard is a floor, not a ceiling

It is worth being clear about what a compliance standard does. It sets the minimum conditions under which a battery may be installed without creating an unacceptable hazard. It does not tell you where the battery will last longest, run coolest, or be easiest to service in eight years’ time. Those are engineering judgements, and they are the difference between a system that meets the rules and a system that still performs in its second decade.

Who is responsible for making sure my battery location is compliant?

The licensed electrical contractor performing the installation. However, the practical risk sits with the homeowner, because a non-compliant or poorly chosen location typically surfaces as a variation, a delay, or a performance shortfall after the contract is signed. Asking for written confirmation of AS/NZS 5139 Amendment 1 compliance at quote stage is the simplest protection.
